Does any of this sound familiar?
These are the signs that the nerve inside a tooth is inflamed or infected. Not everyone with these symptoms needs a root canal — but all of them are worth getting looked at.
- A throbbing ache that keeps you awake at night
- Sharp pain when you bite down or chew
- Lingering sensitivity to hot or cold, long after the drink is gone
- Swelling or tenderness in the gum near one tooth
- A tooth that has darkened compared to the others
- A small pimple-like bump on the gum that keeps coming back
A tooth can also need a root canal without hurting at all, which is why an X-ray matters more than how it feels.
Let us address it directly
Will it hurt?
This is the question almost everyone asks, and avoiding it does not help anyone. So, plainly: the treatment itself should not hurt. The tooth is fully numbed first, and we check that it is numb before starting.
What people remember as “root canal pain” is nearly always the toothache that brought them in. The infection is the painful part. The root canal is what removes it.
Afterwards, expect the tooth to feel tender for a day or two, especially when biting. Ordinary painkillers handle it for most people. If the pain is worse than that, call us — we would rather see you than have you wait it out.
Step by step
What actually happens during treatment
Knowing the order of events takes most of the fear out of it.
Digital X-ray and examination
We image the tooth first to see the shape of the canals and how far the infection has spread. You see the X-ray too, and we explain what it shows.
Numbing the tooth
Local anaesthetic is given and we wait until the tooth is completely numb before starting. If you can still feel it, we stop and give more.
Removing the infection
The inflamed pulp is removed through a small opening in the top of the tooth. This is the part that stops the pain.
Cleaning and shaping the canals
Each canal is cleaned, disinfected and shaped so nothing is left behind to re-infect.
Sealing the tooth
The canals are filled and sealed the same day, and the opening is closed — this is what makes it a single sitting treatment.
Crown to protect it
A treated back tooth becomes brittle, so we fit a crown over it. This is usually done at a follow-up visit once the tooth has settled.

Why one visit instead of four
Conventionally, a root canal is spread across three or four appointments over several weeks, with a temporary filling in between each one.
A single sitting root canal completes the cleaning, shaping and sealing in one appointment. That means fewer injections, fewer trips to Sector 12, and less time walking around with a temporarily sealed tooth.
It is not right for every case. A tooth with active swelling or a severe infection may still need more than one visit, and we will tell you that after the X-ray rather than partway through.
What it costs
The cost depends on which tooth it is and what the X-ray shows — a front tooth with one canal is not the same job as a molar with four.
